1. What are the main causes of hair loss in women, and how can you identify the early signs?
Hair loss in women often stems from genetics, hormonal shifts, stress, or nutritional deficiencies. Signs to watch for include a widening of the parting, increased shedding, or a general loss of volume. Identifying these signs early can make a difference in treatment.
2. How do you know if hair loss is temporary or permanent?
Temporary hair loss usually has a clear trigger like stress, illness, or hormonal changes and resolves once the underlying issue is addressed, often within several months. In contrast, permanent hair loss, such as genetic thinning (female pattern hair loss), or scarring conditions, typically progress over time and may require ongoing management to slow down or improve.
A trichologist can help determine the nature of your hair loss using tools like trichoscopy, which closely examines the scalp and hair follicles. This, along with blood tests to check for deficiencies or hormonal imbalances, can give a clearer picture of whether your hair loss is likely to be temporary or if further steps are needed for ongoing support.
3. Can some conditions be reversed, and if so, how?
Yes, many types of hair loss are manageable or even reversible, but there’s no “magic pill.” Treatment depends on the cause. This could look like: managing stress, correcting deficiencies, or committing to using daily topical treatments. Each approach is tailored to the individual.
4. Does lifestyle affect the health of the hair and scalp?
Absolutely. A balanced diet, stress management, good sleep, and gentle hair care all support healthier hair and scalp. Small adjustments can make a visible difference over time.
5. How easy is it to get a diagnosis, what’s involved, and where does someone go first?
Start with a trichologist, GP or trichoderm (a dermatologist specialising in hair and scalps). Diagnosis may involve a health history review, trichoscopy, and blood tests to identify causes. A trichologist or specialist can then create a personalised treatment plan.
6. There are so many products out there claiming to ‘grow your hair back’, how do you know what’s genuine and what’s not?
It’s true, many products promise miraculous hair growth, which can make it tough to know what really works. Treatments backed by scientific research which have solid evidence supporting their effectiveness, are your best bet. Genuine results tend to take time and consistency rather than instant fixes. When in doubt, consulting with a trichologist can help you navigate these options and choose the best ones for your specific needs. There is no one size fits all when it comes to treating hair loss.
7. If you had to pick just one piece of advice for those experiencing hair loss, what would it be?
Don’t wait to seek support. The sooner we understand what’s happening, the more options we have to help. Diagnosing conditions early can prevent progression, waiting can limit treatment choices down the line. A professional assessment can offer clarity, reassurance, and a personalised plan, giving you peace of mind and the best chance for a positive outcome.
