Turn back time

Are you planning a little getaway this summer?

Whether you're jetting off on a beach holiday, pottering around on a city break, or sailing around on a cruise – your hair topper can absolutely go with you. No faffing, no stress and no questions asked (well... maybe just one, but I've got that sorted for you as well).

Ready? Let's dive in...

1 – Pack your hair topper like a pro

First things first – give her a gentle but thorough brush and tuck her into a silk or satin bag to reduce friction and static. You can even stuff her base with tissue (like a little hair cushion) to help keep her shape. If you’ve got a hair topper box, brilliant – just make sure it’s not squashing your hair topper too flat.

Top tip: Pack your hair topper in your hand luggage. If your main suitcase goes AWOL, at least your hair won't.

2 – Airport security

Hair toppers don’t usually set off alarms – the clips aren’t magnetic, so you’re unlikely to beep your way through security. But if you're feeling a bit anxious, you can always discreetly let staff know you're wearing hair before you walk through the gates.

If, for any reason, you're asked to remove your topper, you have the right to request a private room. It’s rare – but knowing your rights and options can help you feel in control.

Top tip: If you’re wearing a hat, headband or headscarf over your topper, keep it on through security – it gives you a bit of extra coverage if needed.

3 – Keep it cool

Heat can cause a bit of bother for some hair toppers, especially synthetic ones. If you’re going somewhere really hot, stick to shade when you can, don’t leave her out in direct sun, and avoid storing her in hot, humid locations.

Top tip: If your hair topper feels a bit limp from the heat, try turning her inside out for a few minutes to let the cap air out – it just helps freshen things up.

Bonus tip: If your scalp is feeling particularly sweaty but you still want to wear your topper, stick a thin pantyliner or sanitary pad to the inside of the base. Soaks up the moisture and keeps the base clean.

4 – Swimming? Best not to...

Swimming pools, the sea and hair toppers don’t mix – chlorine and salt water are a big no-no. If you're taking a dip, pop her off, tie your natural hair up, and enjoy your swim (headscarves and hats are a godsend for your hair and your skin around the pool). You can always pop her back on for drinks at sunset later (she’s much more of a cocktail gal than a swimmer anyway!).

Top tip: Bring a sealable plastic bag or waterproof pouch to store your topper safely when you're by the pool – no risk of soggy surprises!

5 – Simple daily care

You don’t need a full salon kit... just a small brush and comb, and your usual hair oil for hydration which you can use on the mid-lengths down to the ends. And if you are using hair straighteners for smoothing, don't forget your heat protector. Extra brownie points if you remember to brush her through before bed.

Top tip: Lay your topper on a clean microfibre towel each night to let her air out – especially in humid climates.

If you’ve bought your hair topper from me, you’ll already have aftercare advice tailored to your piece – but if anything crops up just ask. Treat her like the fabulous travel companion she is, and she’ll look just as good at the end of the trip as she did at the start.

Cocktail optional. Hair drama not included.
