How to rock your hair topper – handling comments with confidence!

Updated: 4 days ago

Miracle hair growth products

Wearing your natural hair as it is, despite any hair loss you may be experiencing, could be the choice that feels right for you… there’s no need to cover or change anything if you’re confident and happy the way you are.

Wearing a hair topper, however, is also a deeply personal decision… one that is yours and yours alone to make, not what society dictates.

If a hair topper does become part of your routine, you’ll find it’s a quick and simple way to boost your confidence, often creating a ripple effect in other areas of your life. It allows you to feel like yourself again… comfortable, relaxed, and free to enjoy yourself without worrying about your hair.

However… as a Hair Replacement Specialist, a question I get asked a lot is "What do I say if someone notices?”

At Glow with Alison I work hard to create styles that are natural, blended and discreet, so people are far more likely to notice your boosted confidence and smile than your hair topper.

But for those rare moments when someone decides to comment, I want to make sure you are ready.

Building body confidence

By choosing to wear a hair topper, you have already taken the first step in reclaiming the confidence that hair loss may have stolen from you. So let’s celebrate that first and foremost. And how amazing that we have these kinds of products at our disposal, ready to make you feel fabulous!

Sam Davies – Body Confidence Photographer in Eastbourne, East Sussex, is no stranger to empowering women to cast off their inhibitions and celebrate their bodies. Here's her take on finding your inner confidence...

“Body image is more than just what you see in the mirror. It’s the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs you have about your appearance… your height, weight, shape, or even your hair… and how you experience it day-to-day. When we’re in a tough place with our body image, it can feel overwhelming and all-consuming. These feelings run deep and can be mentally, emotionally and even physically exhausting. Building body confidence is about shifting how you see yourself and celebrating the choices that help you feel your best. True confidence comes from letting go of the pressure to meet unrealistic standards and focusing on what makes you feel good in your own skin”.

If this resonates with you, Sam has written 'Your guide to Body Confidence' for even more tips, guidance and support.

Keeping things in perspective

It’s important to remember that most people are far more focused on themselves than on scrutinising others. Whether it’s their own insecurities or simply getting through their day, people rarely notice the details we tend to overthink.

Think about the last time you were out and about… did you spend your time analysing other people’s hairstyles, or were you just going about your own business?

Even if someone does take a closer look, the chances are they will simply notice how brilliant your hair looks and move on. People aren’t looking out for hair toppers or wigs, so when you’re out in the world with your new hair, remind yourself that you’re likely the only one who knows the full story.

Finding your tribe

Finding a supportive community can make all the difference on your hair journey. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can provide reassurance, encouragement, and practical advice.

Online forums, Facebook groups and even local meet-ups are full of wonderful individuals who understand what you're going through and are eager to share their stories and tips. These spaces are a great way to see that you’re not alone and to find inspiration from others.

Hair Replacement Specialists are also here to help you every step of the way, providing guidance and ensuring you feel supported in your decisions. Seek out those who lift you up and share in your journey.

What to say and when to say it

Wearing your topper for the first time can be a little nerve-wracking. Wearing it around the house for a short while to start with then building up with a quick visit to the shops for example, before sporting it out to a social engagement can really help. You will soon realise that nobody has noticed and you can go about your day without worrying.

However here are some scenarios you may encounter:

1. If nobody notices... result!

Enjoy the confidence boost of knowing you look fabulous!

2. If someone compliments your hair... result!

Respond with a smile and a simple “Thank you so much!”

3. If someone asks more directly...

Why not try out one the following:

“Oh I just decided to try something new with my hair!”

“I’ve found something that gives me extra volume and I love it!”

“I have a little helper to give my hair a bit of oomph – it’s so easy and I just love how it looks!”

“I have found a way to get the hair I’ve always wanted, it’s done wonders for my confidence!”

“It’s the best hair ‘hack’ I’ve ever found, I can do my hair in under 30 seconds!”

On topper of the world!*

Your hair is nobody’s business but yours. By choosing to wear a hair topper, you’ve made a decision to feel great about yourself and that’s something to celebrate. Confidence starts with taking control of your own journey, and you’re already doing that.

Remember, you’re not alone, there are supportive communities and professionals, like me, ready to help you along the way.

*sorry 😁
